Life In The Tech Lane |
Have you ever found yourself at an event or family gathering carrying a camera and a camcorder? Is up to you to not only take good photos but your expected to get the video footage as well? If this sounds familiar to you then you will really like the Sanyo Xacti CG6. Before I get into the review let me preface by saying I have three children, ages Ten, Seven & Four. The number of events to attend seems to grow drastically each year. As a parent in the digital age it would be a shame to let the years go by without recording all I can. I hope to be able to sit in my rocker 50 years from now and watch videos of my children and look at their photos from my 120", 240 Megapixel 3D projector. (Hey a guy can dream). What I don't enjoy is having two devices to get good photos as well as good video. That's were the Sanyo CG6 comes in, good video and great photos in one extremely small package. The CG6 is small enough to fit in your shirt or coat pocket without a problem. I am so impressed with how Sanyo was able to pack so much digital capture ability into this camera/camcorder. The fit and finish is very good. I can only say that some electronics devices just feel cheap while others exude quality. The Sanyo is the latter; it feels like it will last for years to come. It not only has a solid feel but the gloss finish looks rich. The drawback to the gloss finish is that it tends to show fingerprints. I was able to find the CG6 at Wal-Mart during the Christmas sales for $199.00 without rebates. What do you get for your money? For starters you get a 6 MP camera for still shots. The camera function is easy to access and the photo quality is very good. I want to say up front I am not a professional photographer by any means. What I do know is a good photo when I see one. The Sanyo takes better photos than the stand alone digital camera I paid $300.00 for a few years back. The color is rich and there seems to be very little pixilation or blur. Posted is an untouched photo for review. The CG6 has a 10x optical zoom and the auto focus works well. The camcorder function is very acceptable. It is not as good as some high end DV footage I have seen but keep in mind for HD quality you will pay four times as much. In proper lighting you will get good DVD quality footage. The sound recording is very impressive for a device this size. The video resolution is 640 x 480 and records in the compact Mpeg4 format. This format provides good quality without huge files sizes. Power on speed is also very good from the time you hit the power button to shooting footage is about four or five seconds. The ability to switch from video to camera function is also easy and quick. One of my favorite features on the Sanyo is the recording media. The CG6 records to a standard SD card. The video and still shots are stored in separate folders on an easy to remove card. You will get about 1 hr. 20 mins. of video on the highest quality video setting. Remove your SD card and slide it in your PC card reader and you will have your digital memories on your PC in no time. Add to that the fact the 2 GB SD cards are now selling for as little as $20.00 and it is easy to have extra storage on hand. Other features include image stabilization and flash. One of the drawbacks due to the small size is that someone with large hands may have problems with the control buttons. I have average hand size and have no problems. The software for options & settings is laid out in an easy to understand format but does have room for improvement. I would challenge anyone to find another camera/camcorder combo with as much to offer in a package this size for $200.00. I look forward to using this as my primary device until the Sanyo HD hybrids become more affordable. Best wishes with your buying decisions and if you find something better for the money please let me know about it. |
